- Fluidity is something that everyone seems to be after nowadays. Whether it be in writing or song or in people's everyday lives, we all seem to crave fluidity. Fluidity in the sense of memoirs seems to be as follows; instead of saying that you learned something from an experience you say that you are constantly learning new things. That you are constantly changing and this experience in the long run really doesn't mean much.
- One of my favorite memoirs is from Toi Derricotte's book The Black Notebooks. In this book Toi writes about her life as a light skinned black woman who has experienced a lot of racism and trauma throughout her life. The story I have in mind follows her experience with her husband when buying a house. Since her husband is a dark skinned man when she went alone she was shown more houses than when she went with her husband. This story taught me that there is a lot of covert racism in the world that not everyone can see. You would only really know about it if you were someone experiencing it yourself.
- I feel like Toi Derricotte's story couldn't really be transferred to a blog because it's so personal and intense that it would detract from the gravity of the piece.
