Writing is not a chore, or something that you do to meet an arbitrary quota (that is called homework). If “because you have to” is the only thing driving your pen, then the only thing that will come out is a few paragraphs of soulless, meaningless drivel. And won’t be anything you would be proud of. At most, in a few days you’ll cringe at how awful it is and crumple it away. All that you’ll have accomplished is waste your time.
In order to write, real passion is needed. To create something you won’t be embarrassed of, you need to apply real thought into it. And sometimes, you just need to sit on it for a while, and get back to it later. Nothing will come from forcing it.

I agree with you almost 100% on writing for homework being soulless. I know that throughout my years of schooling and doing writing assignments I have produced work that was flat. And I agree that it was flat because I just didn't care enough, I was writing it to get it done and get a grade.
ReplyDeleteBut, I have also learned that even though I end up writing some of these things because I have to, I end up discovering some interesting ideas. When I'm writing for an assignment I take time to think about it and what I want my work to be about. Sometimes that leads to boring writing on a piece of paper, but other times it can lead to an extraordinary story.
Never take any writing you do for granted, even if it is passionless you can still learn something from it. And you might even discover an interesting idea for a future story.
